Beijing Dumpling House (北京饺子馆)

Beijing Dumpling House Guiyang Guizhou sweet and sour pork 2

Beijing Dumpling House was the first restaurant I went to on my own in Guiyang. In a sea of small restaurants with all-Chinese menus, this place has a menu full of photos, so those who can’t read Chinese can order easily. For people who are not particularly excited about Guiyang’s spicy food, Beijing’s cuisine can be a welcome respite, as very few dishes have chilies. Despite the restaurant’s name, there are many options besides the … Continue reading

Yi Luoguo (一烙锅)

Yi Luoguo Food Guiyang Guizhou

Yi Luoguo is yet another place with the delightful checklist menu that means you don’t have to really talk to anybody. Whatever you order is cooked in the kitchen, brought out plate by plate, and piled into a savory heap atop a convex iron pot in the middle of the table. While the food arrives cooked, the iron pot it’s placed in allows you to crisp up your meats and veggies. The domed shape of … Continue reading

Baidu Kaorou (百度烤肉)

Baidu Kaorou Guiyang Guizhou Huaguoyuan Mall Dinner

Baidu Kaorou is a chain BBQ restaurant that has several locations in Guiyang. For me, it’s the ultimate hangover food – easy to order without talking to anybody, greasy, and delicious. Your food is ordered off of a checklist menu, so if your Chinese isn’t so good you don’t have to worry about flipping pages and pointing. When it arrives, it’s raw. You’ve got to cook it on the little griddle in the middle of … Continue reading

Halal Restaurant (清真餐厅)

Halal Beef Dry Hotpot Guiyang Guizhou

Though simply named, this restaurant offers one of the most incredible meals in town: a mouth-watering group meal called dry beef hotpot. It’s especially popular amongst the city’s expats as it’s one of a handful of restaurants that serves only halal food. The menu includes several varieties of hotpot (including beef tripe, if that’s your thing), but their star dish is so good that I don’t even know anybody who’s ordered anything else.   ATE/LOVED … Continue reading

Xishui Black Tofu Hotpot (习水黑豆花火锅)

Xishui Black Tofu Hotpot Guiyang Guizhou

This was only my second time visiting this gem. A friend who lives nearby recommended it, and after eating it once I couldn’t wait to go back. The menu is a simple checklist format for the soup base, meat, tofu and some vegetable selections. Walk to the back of the restaurant to grab your own green veggies — no need to order those.   ATE   We ordered a small pot that came with meatballs … Continue reading
